Rainforest tour

This trip will take you to the unique native forest belonging to Maquenque Eco-Lodge. You will discover “the jungle” while our local bilingual guides explain everything to you. The tour starts in our orchid garden, passes through the botanic garden, the butterfly farm, the medical plant garden and then enters the forest. The trail takes you to beautiful places where you discover a great amount of the rainforests secrets. You will be amazed! To finish this tour we will show you the vegetable garden of the Lodge.

Night walk

Our night walk special offers you the great possibility to observe nocturnal animals. A natural bilingual guide will take you through the garden of the Lodge and rainforest. You will have the unique chance to explore the nature from another point of view. Various unknown sounds will surround you - a wonderful experience. Nocturnal life is completely different from the day life, you will be surprised! It displays for example frogs, spiders, butterflies or snakes, each species in its own environment. After sunset the nocturnal life begins. Be part of it!

Bird watching tour

This tour is our special tour to observe birds! The variety of the different bird species here in this region is really unique!!! The area at Maquenque wildlife refuge is the habitat of the Great Green Macaw and many more. This tour starts very early in the morning. You will be taken through the garden and swamps until there is enough light to enter the rainforest.

Horseback riding tour

Enjoy the amazing experience of discovering the area and the rainforest the typical way: from the back of a horse. A local cowboy will take you along the riverside, enjoying the beautiful landscape with a really excellent view on the river. In the village of Santa Rita you will have a break, which offers you the possibility to get an impression of the local people’s life. Later you will enter the forest, and as the horse finds its way alone you have the opportunity to discover your surrounding close to nature. Leaving the forest we shall have a stop at the tree, where the Great Green Macaw has its nest.

Half day boat trip

Take part in a relaxing boat trip on Rio San Carlos, and observe the unique native wildlife such as birds, crocodiles, turtles, bats and many more. You will be taken up to the border of Nicaragua, where you will stay a short time to get to know the village of Boca San Carlos. There you also get the chance to visit a typical local family, to obtain an impression of their life.

Fishing tour

A local fisherman invites you to a fishing trip nearby. Initially you will be given instructions of how to use typical native fishing equipment. You can enjoy the silence and atmosphere of the river while fishing. From this spot you can also see an incredible variety of animals and even enjoy a relaxing cup of Costa Rican coffee!

At the start of the tour the guide gives you paddle instructions so you are well prepared for the relaxing and amazing floating trip on the river. You can focus on nature and enjoy the unique and relaxed surrounding.
Floating slowly on the river you discover a lot of different waterbirds and river animals. Just take your time!

El Castillo

The tour to the Nicaraguan native village “El Castillo” is a boat trip, leaving directly from the lodge. The journey by boat is really great to observe an incredible amount of animals, whose habitat is Rio San Carlos and Rio San Juan. For example birds, monkeys, turtles or crocodiles. We will pass Nicaraguan Immigration in the village of Boca San Carlos. We then enter Rio San Juan and pass by the amazingly changed countryside. We get pleasure from seeing little huts of local people, who live along the river. Later on we will visit the Bartola reserve to enjoy the beautiful nature. From there the tour takes us to a nice typical Nicaraguan lunch at the village of El Castillo. After the lunch we visit the fortress of El Castillo with its incredible view over the San Juan River.
